Sculptural version of the Roman mask 'Figurehead with Medusa's head'. This mask was found in Uxama, Soria. The original is currently in the Soria Numantino Museum. It's a wall of undetermined function representing the head of the Gorgon Medusa. The snakes that usually make up the hair of this mythological character are represented by using a headband arround the outside and a necklace with torques that surround the neck. The top of the head is topped by two small wings. Apart from being highly decorative, these pieces were of prophylactic and apotropaic value.
The material used in the sculpture is bronze and the technique is sculptural modeling and lost wax casting.
