Version of the Roman bronze figure 'Venus with Hand on Chest'. The sculpture was found prior to 1949 at the Roman site of Libya, Herramelluri, La Rioja. The original is from the second century and is currently in the Museum of la Rioja. Venus is wearing a garment wrapped around her at the hips. She is bare from the waist up and is covering her right breast with her right hand. Her hair is tied at the nape of the neck and divides into two strands that fall onto her shoulders. She is wearing a headband. Being the Goddess of fertility and love, images of Venus were obligatory in the private lives of Roman women, heightening both male and female desire.
